Billiards is the backpacker's game. A rickety table and a few worn down cues are a common sight in many of the hostels and bars along the Gringo Trail, and it's rare to see the table unoccupied for long. Pool is a worldwide hobby and though few can match the experience of the Irish and English, most backpackers know how to play and enjoy the game. Rule disagreements are common ((For instance, most Europeans play that two shots are awarded after a scratch, a rule unheard of to North Americans.)) but a spirit of camaraderie and lighthearted competition prevails. Many a new backpacker friendship is formed around the pool table.
